The University of Ghana Business School has held its 35th Annual Management Day under the theme, “Harnessing the Digital Economy for National Development” at the R. S. Amegashie Auditorium of the School.

Pro-Vice Chancellor in charge of Research Innovation Development, Prof John Gyapong who chaired for the event pointed out that, the Management Day celebrations should not be seen merely as an annual ritual but rather it should be a process that would impact society and help the Business School to grow.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof Ernest Aryeetey, in brief remarks, said in order for Universities to remain relevant, Universities must be thought leaders who initiate change and guide society as well as respond to changes in society by rethinking new ways and strategies of doing things. The Vice Chancellor noted that in the quest to become a world class University, the University of Ghana was seeking to do just that.

He said moving forward, the Business School would be integrated into the new College of Humanities to foster interdisciplinary exchanges between business students and other disciplines to make business graduates much more versatile and engaged.

Prof. Aryeetey commended the Business School for its contribution towards national development through programmes such as the Management Days which he argued have been utilized to bridge the gap between the Business school and experienced professionals to promote mutual understanding of the world of work.

Minister of Communications, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, delivering his keynote address, indicated that the theme aims at exploring how Ghana’s public and private sector entities and individuals can exploit the benefits offered by the internet and its related technologies that are revolutionizing our economic, social, political and technological environment. Dr. Omane Boamah paid glowing tribute to the University of Ghana, the Business School and industry players for organizing such programmes, and demonstrating readiness to create and add value to technology and communication creation.

The Dean of the School, Prof Kwame Ameyaw Domfeh, said Management Day’s is an important day in the history of the Business School and a time for captains of industry, politicians, state men and women to interact with students and Faculty members. He observed that the digital age has come to stay where technologies are replacing human effort, and stressed the need to develop strategies that would enable human beings race ahead of machines.

The programme paved way for three sub themes under which; the Director-General, National Information Technology Agency(NITA), Mr. William Tevie, Director of Applications, NITA, Mrs Veronica Boateng and the Head of Technology at the National Identification Authority, all gave presentation on how far their various institutions have utilized Information Technology; and indicated and its prospects for Ghana.

The 2014 Management Day saw the inauguration of a Mentoring Office by the 1993 Alumni of the School led by their President, Mr David Okyere Nyarko. The a Mentoring office will provide career counseling for students of the Business School.

The 2014 Management Day was rounded off with a job fair dubbed, “Destination Legon”. The purpose of the event was to create an opportunity for the students to market the Tourism industry using Legon as a case study. The best group who would emerge as the overall best would have the chance of travelling with the Ghana Tourism Authority to the world Tourism Market next year.
